Introduction
The science behind Bee Venom is still developing and researchers continue to find new uses for it. We add small quantities of Bee Venom to Manuka Honey to create our hugely successful Nectar Ease product range and this also forms the basis for our Royal Nectar skincare range.
Bee venom composition
Bee Venom composition and strength varies between Honeybee species and small variances are identifiable between bee breeds and locations.
Bee Venom contains a variety of peptides, including melittin, apamin, adolapin, the mast-cell-degranulating (MCD) peptide, enzymes (i.e., phospholipase A(2)), biologically active amines (i.e., histamine and epinephrine), and nonpeptide components which have a variety of pharmaceutical properties.
Bee Venom’s unique composition has multiple effects on the body. The natural components of Bee Venom have been isolated and studied scientifically and one of the most important components has been identified as Melittin. Making up about 50% of the Bee Venom.
Bee venom uses
Here at Nelson Honey we use Bee venom in two ways and have become famous for our innovation with this ingredient.
We started adding Bee Venom to honey over 3 decades ago after feedback from beekeepers about its success in supporting an active lifestyle. A range of Nectar Ease products was formed with our original Bee Venom and Manuka Honey, Nectar Ease, gaining a reputation in New Zealand for providing a joint health product in a tasty format.
More recent research has focused on using Bee venom as a cosmetic ingredient and its topical application for promoting skin regeneration. Research published in South Korea in 2015 showed that a bee venom serum treatment clinically improved facial wrinkles by decreasing total wrinkle area, total wrinkle count and average wrinkle depth.
Nectar Ease honey was originally used as a facial treatment gaining worldwide media attention from which our Royal Nectar skincare range was born.
Today the Royal Nectar skincare range has a strong following and particularly famous with Chinese consumers.
Bee venom extraction
The Bee Venom used in Nectar Ease is extracted exclusively from the Apis Melifera species of Honeybee. Bee Venom is extracted from Honeybees using low voltage electrical stimulation. Bee keepers use a so-called collection frame which has wire electrodes installed that have a low electrical current running through them on a glass base, just like in the picture above. These frames are installed in honey hives and bees that come into contact with the wire electrodes will receive a small electrical shock. This causes bees to sting the glass, releasing the venom without losing their barbed sting (which usually results in bee deaths).
Once the collection process has finished, the Bee Venom dries on the glass, then the whole frame is transported to a laboratory to collect the venom.

Science of Honey
Honey has been used since ancient times for its special properties. Good quality honey can be high in beneficial plant compounds including antioxidants. It contains a number of nutrients (see below) and has high levels of glucose and fructose which offers a healthier alternative to refined sugar making it a great source of energy. However, the composition of a honey batch depends on the floral source(s) available to the bees that produced the honey.
Nelson Honey operates a team of beekeepers and has hives are located throughout the beautiful regions at top of the South Island of New Zealand. Hives enjoy spectacular and remote locations including Maori Bay in the Marlborough Sounds and Rainbow Station in St Arnaud.
Here at Nelson Honey we can trace our honey back to the hives they came from and our team of beekeepers maintain the health and happiness of all our bees.
Manuka Honey
There has been much research done on the components of manuka honey, leading to worldwide acclaim of this wonderful honey.
Manuka Honey is unique to New Zealand and its special benefits have been a traditional part of folklore throughout New Zealand’s settled history.
At Nelson Honey, we test all our Manuka Honey for MGO (Methylglyoxal) activity along with other chemical markers to ensure that it is authentic manuka honey. Methylglyoxal is expressed as a minimum number of mg/kg and scientific evidence has confirmed it as being a key compound that occurs naturally in Manuka honey.
Honeydew Honey
While Manuka Honey is extremely well-known for its special properties, our Honeydew Honey may also offer some excellent health benefits. It contains much higher levels of complex sugars called Oligosaccharides than nectar (or floral) honey.
Research shows Oligosaccharides are important to maintaining a healthy digestive system and work as a prebiotics support the growth of good bacteria in the gut.
Honeydew Honey also contains higher levels of antioxidants and minerals compared to other floral honeys.

I have used this honey for many years. Suddenly it is unavailable from my suppliers in the uk. My arthritis deteriorated drastically whilst I was away from home, looking after my son following an accident, as I had not taken any honey with me. On returning home I ordered direct from New Zealand, and upon the arrival of the Nectar Ease honey it is once again making my arthritis and fibromyalgia liveable again. Thank you.

I never thought it possible until I read EACH and every product description. Totally amazing and a wonderful “read”. I have had debilitating lower back pain for quite some time now. It is degenerative. I decided to try the Nectar Ease and it is wonderful! Take a spoonful every morning before work and I can now sit longer at my desk without pain. I also ordered the Honeydew Honey and am patiently awaiting its arrival as I do have GE problems. Thank you so much! Your products that I have tried so far are totally amazing! 🙂

Wow! This stuff really works for me! I get a lot of pain, muscular, joint and nerve pain and have taken all sorts of stuff to manage the pain. I can honestly say this stuff has helped me more than I thought it would, having been on high doses of tramadol that didn’t seem to help much and had pretty yucky side affects. I was sceptical but I’m so grateful for the chance I gave it! There is hope out there guys, for me it came in the form of bee venom. Blessings…

Started taking Manuka Honey with added BEE VENOM a month ago and have found the symtems of arthritis to be diminishing. Was at a stage of hardly being able to walk in the cold weather, but now the toe joints are much more manageable. Started with a 1/4 teaspoon as recommended, felt a little tightening in the throat, but now am up to a comfortable 1 teaspoon with no adverse reaction at all. Highly recommend this product……
